Critical Mass for Trained Leadership

Venturing has been called "the best kept secret in the Church."  Because the type of Venturing program we use in our Priest Quorums has developed quietly, many leaders of youth in the Church are not fully acquainted with its potential for strengthening young men. Here are statements by two leaders of youth who have discovered the value of a good Venturing program for their Priests:

"Things became 'well oiled' following the participation of nearly my entire quorum at Priest Leadership Conference and my attendance, along with my Young Mens President/Venturer Advisor, at Venturer training...  This training has given us the skills to have consistent success in our Priest's Quorum.  The Venturer program helped us to reach out and activate three young men, and within three months all were ordained Priests and making a contribution to the success of the Quorum.

"This opportunity to learn and exercise leadership skills has given our young men the much needed preparation for their upcoming missions. As I send off each one to serve... I see a confident, prepared, and enthused young man because of Aaronic Priesthood Venturing."

                                                             --Bishop LaVelle Prince

"...It is apparent to me that in any ward two things must take place before the Lord's program can move forward... [First], there must be at least two adult leaders who are fully-trained Venturer leaders before the full vision of the program is caught and carried out... These two are the Bishop and Young Men's President.  If you do not have the support of these individuals, the program is destined for failure.

"Second, the young men in the Priests Quorum must be trained in Venturer leadership. This should be a minimum of at least two boys per year so that enthusiasm and excellence is kept alive in the quorum.

"...just as you cannot describe the taste of salt with very much success, so it is with [these training courses]... words cannot express the spiritual reform and renewed vigor that one goes through."

                                                             --Bishop Brad Barker

Persons with experience in using Venturing in Priests Quorums agree:

    •  For Venturing to work in Priests Quorums, training of key leaders is essential.
    •  There is a "critical mass" in training leaders, before Venturing "takes off" and
    becomes an effective force:

Adult Leaders: 2 Leaders (preferably Bishop and Quorum/Crew Advisor) trained.
Youth Leaders: At least 2-3 leaders (preferably present or future Priests Quorum Assistants) attend training every year.
