Getting a Stake TLC Going

12 STEPS FOR GETTING A STAKE/ZONE TEEN LEADERS COUNCIL (TLC) GOING
(A Stake can be a BSA Zone)

Who?

What?

1.

Stake Presidency/
Stake YM President

Designate/Call Stake TLC Advisor: Designate the Stake Young Mens President himself or a call an Age-Group Adviser for Venturing to serve as Stake TLC Advisor. Consider having two persons involved to the extent that BSA youth protection requirements are met for direct work with youths.

2.

Stake TLC Advisor

Organize the TLC Cabinet and TLC: Obtain approval from the Stake Presidency for a young man to serve as TLC Chairman. After his calling, work with him to recommend young men to be called as 1st and 2nd Vice-Chairmen and Secretary/Treasurer. Call a meeting, inviting ward level Crew Presidents or Priest Quorum 1st Assistants to attend. Present the TLC Cabinet for sustaining.  (TLC could also be the Young Mens part of a Stake Youth Committee.)

3.

Stake TLC Advisor:

Organize Stake Venturing Committee: May use ward Crew/Priests Quorum Advisors. They may double as consultants for stake Venturing activities, and give other input on stake-level Venturing activities.

4.

TLC Cabinet:

Conduct an Venturer Interest Survey (VIS): Obtain input from the Crews on members' interests and preferences for stake Venturing activities.

5.

TLC Advisor:

Conduct TLC Officer's Seminar: Generally done as an overnight retreat. Typically will cover: (1) Duties of officers; (2) Leadership skill training; (3) Preparation of a stake Venturing calendar. The TLC Cabinet may take the lead in discussions preparing the latter, based on the VIS.  If the TLC does not yet have a DDI or Code & Bylaws, these may be decided/developed (or assignment given to the Administrative Vice-Chairman or a committee to bring back recommendations at a later business meeting.)

6.

TLC Cabinet and Adviser:

Meet regularly (perhaps monthly) to plan TLC meetings and to make sure the stake Venturing program is operating effectively.

7.

TLC Cabinet:

Conduct monthly TLC meeting and oversee activities: Use Robert's Rules of Order.  Conduct TLC business. Have activity chairmen report on plans and evaluate activities.

8.

Stake Venturing Committee:

Meet and provide needed consultants: Meet periodically.  Determine help needed by the TLC, and particularly by activity chairmen, to successfully organize coming activities. Make sure that needed consultants are notified and involved.

9.

Individual Crews:

Provide activity (experience area) committee representatives: Crew activity chairmen may serve on stake committees to plan specific activities

10.

Activity Chairmen:

Conduct activities: With the assistance of ward committee representatives, and with help from consultants as needed, prepare activity plans.  Present plans in Crew business meetings for approval.  Carry out activities. Evaluate.

11.

TLC Chairman (or other TLC member, as appointed):

Participate in other Venturing Teen Leader Council (TLC): Represent the stake TLC at District or Council TLC meetings, if such are held. Give input. Report on District and Council programs

12.

TLC Cabinet:

Help individual Crews get organized and trained: Work with individual Crews that are having trouble in implementing Venturing in their ward. Give training and other needed help.  Model the Venturing method in all meetings, activities, and actions.
